BBC Training

As part of my involvement in BBC Sound First, I had the privilege of attending two masterclasses. One was conducted by Eloise Whitmore of Naked Productions, while the other was led by Benbrick, the sound designer and producer behind "Have You Heard George’s Podcast." These sessions provided invaluable insights into their creative processes, workflows, and thought patterns. Gratitude doesn’t quite capture the appreciation I have for the depth of knowledge that I gained during these sessions.

My interest in Audio Drama has only grown over time, particularly with the natural and dynamic sound they achieve at BBC Audio Drama. In order to really explore the details of this further, I arranged a remote sound design and editing session with Peter Ringrose, a seasoned BBC sound designer. Peter guided me through his meticulous workflow for editing and sound designing dramas, offering a true insight into his expertise.

To further my education, Peter extended an invitation to visit BBC Broadcasting House which gave me the opportunity to observe a recording session for "Master Mason," a comedy penned by Lizzy Mansfield. Witnessing the voice actors in action was nothing short of fascinating; their talent and dedication is inspirational. I arrived early to understand Peter’s setup. The BBC Audio Drama studio is a fascinating place. It has distinct areas for varied acoustics. There are mock ups of kitchens and bedrooms and an area to emulate outdoor ambiance. Peter demonstrated such attention to detail by ingeniously laying down gravel to enhance the authenticity of the recording.

This practical experience has left a lasting impression on me. I have so much admiration for the artistry behind Audio Drama production.

Recently, I had the pleasure of shadowing the award-winning Tony Churnside. Tony is a wizard of sound design, who continually pushes the creative boundaries within radio. He guided me through several episodes of The Skewer, offering an illuminating observation into the creation of these sound collages. His exceptional skill in layering sound and his seamless transitions between sections were particularly inspiring, providing me with a valuable insights into his ingenious techniques.
